What's in YOUR pantry?

WARNING: This may be my most random post yet.

I don't want this to come off as a post about your "pantry staples." You know those articles? They convince you that if you have a well stocked pantry, you can whip up a Martha-quality meal in no time. I am not trying to reinvent the wheel here as we have all seen 7,000 articles with that title.

What I mean is: WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR PANTRY? Literally, I am curious.

This post came about because I was staring at my pantry the other day and I realized that I always have Progresso Breadcrumbs. Always. No fail. And I wondered what other people always have in their pantry/fridge. (Note: Some of my items will include things that are in my refrigerator because I don't think doing 2 separate lists is necessary, but saying "What's in your pantry" sounds better for a blog post then "What's in your pantry and refrigerator?" Doesn't that just seem silly?)

After all this pantry talk, you are probably wondering what my pantry looks like. Here it is:

This is clearly a joke. Those of you that know me know that:

a) I am not this organized. I don't even want to be this organized because then I would be one of those anal retentive people that can't loosen up and have a beer before 5 o'clock without seeing their therapist. Not that I do that. (Only on the weekends.)

b) We could fit 7 of my pantries into this ginormous one. My guest room is practically this small. Seriously, put a cot in this pantry and you could have cousin Timmy spend the night in here. He wouldn't bother you to make him breakfast... it's all within arm's reach. I will have this pantry the day that I have a beach house with french doors that open to a stone path leading out to the ocean. Not that I dream about that or anything.

Enough kidding around people, we have important lists to get to. This is my pantry:

I laid it all out there for you guys. No rearranging, no cleaning, just a bunch of jumbled food. I can sense you judging me through my computer, so don't even think about it. My motto is: It's really small in here, and we like to eat, so let's cram in as much stuff as possible. Buy 1 get 8 free? Sign me up. I will figure out where to put it later. (Mr. Fo really loves this about me. Like when he reaches for the cereal and 4 bags of flour come crashing down on him, he just says "Gosh, I love you honey.")

I REALLLLY need a sarcasm font. But if you couldn't tell that was sarcasm, we probably can't be friends.

On that note, here is my list of pantry/fridge items that I ALWAYS have on hand:

1) Progresso Breadcrumbs (as I said before). Every good Italian girl needs breadcrumbs for chicken parm and meatball making. Why Progresso? I don't know. The only answer I have is that is what my Mom bought, so they must be the best kind. Why don't I make my own breadcrumbs? I know some of you true foodies are thinking this. Well... I just don't. My mom bought Progresso, so I am sticking with Progresso for life. LIFE.

2) Craisins: You know, dried cranberries? I put these in tons of things... yogurt, cereal, but mostly, this salad which I make constantly. You should try it tonight. It's that good.

3. Eggs. OMG I LOVE EGGS. (I know they go in the fridge and not the pantry, see above.) Egg sandwiches, scrambled eggs, eggs benedict, fried eggs... the list goes on. Don't even get me started with the eggs you need on hand for baking. Remember Bubba from Forrest Gump? Shrimp this, and Shrimp that? I am like Bubba but with eggs.

4. Flour. So let me paint a little picture for you. You are at home and feeling blah. Well, if you have flour (and some other basic items), you can make a cake! Or cupcakes! Or cookies! Or something delicious that will have you humming away in the kitchen in no time. (Or at least that's what happens to me.) Please note that I am aware that as girls, we need to watch our girlish figures. If you aren't one of those lucky people who can eat whatever they want all the time (I hate you by the way), find someone to bake for. Find a co-worker or a neighbor who loves your baked goods and get rid of that junk you just made that made you happy. This is why flour is so important. Flour= happiness.

5) Peanut Butter - Oh peanut butter. How I love thee. Crunchy or creamy... on a sandwich or an apple, you totally rock. I don't have enough good things to say about this delectable jar of deliciousness. It's a "healthy fat," if there is such a thing. Go ahead and eat the whole jar with a spoon; never mind that it's a billion calories. (Maybe not such a good idea.) I think we should all thank this guy, George Washington Carver, who had something to do with peanuts. In fact, my finely tuned brained and years of history lessons are telling me that he is behind the whole peanut butter situation. See picture below - he also appears to be wearing a purple suit, which is awesome. Peanut butter inventor AND fashionista. Who knew.

(I don't know where I got this picture, I apologize to all George Washington Carver historians out there)

Honorable mentions: Tomatoes, Onions, Potatoes, Pasta, Hummus... the list goes on. I am sure you are over hearing about my pantry. But it was fun to write about.

So tell me... what is the one thing YOU always have in your pantry?

  9. I always have Sauerkraut (no idea how to spell it). I love the stuff...but I seem to never make it, so I always have 2 or 3 cans just staring at me. You would think I would either make it or quit buying it.

  10. I always have onions, bread, chocolate and coffee. We also rock the Progresso bread crumbs. My mom didn't use them, but they are sentimental to me. Joe made chicken parm on our 2nd date. I always think of that every time I look at them.

Anywho, great post! You almost had me thinking you had remodeled your pantry. LOL!

  13. We have Progresso breadcrumbs, too! Both Plain and Italian varieties. I have to add all baking needs (flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder), a myriad of spices, tea bags and an assortment of vinegars...ya know how you buy a special type for 1 recipe and then the bottle just sits in there for ages??
